Whitaker was born the son of a farmer but went into painting and interior design and at 16 moved to Colorado and continued his trade. He later moved to Ventura, California and worked as a carriage painter and in 1885 moved to Santa Monica where he went into contracting and served as a street superintendent. He later purchased acres of land near Santa Monica and became one of the first to plant lima beans in the Southern part of California. At the time of his death he owned 70 acres of land and his wife carried on with the ranch and added a walnut grove and vineyard.
