Mr. John Willie Whitaker, Jr., 68, died Friday morning (March 2, 2007) at Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness.

He is a native of Bibb County, but he has lived in Waycross for 41 years. He was a farmer before serving in the United States Navy for 4 years during the Cuban Conflict and the National Guard for 3 years. During his service in the Navy, he served on the ammunition ships, USS Suribachi and USS Pawcatuck. He was employed by Southland Corporation for 17 years as a supervisor of 7/11 Convenience Stores. He also owned and operated Whitaker's Minit Mart for several years.

Mr. Whitaker also loved the Lord and served Him as a charter member and former deacon of Victory Baptist Church in Blackshear. He was also a member and trustee of Gospel Baptist Church in Black Creek, GA.

He is the son of the late John Willie Whitaker, Sr. and Marguerite Wooten Whitaker. He is also preceded in death by a brother, Lex Whitaker.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Jean Selph Whitaker of Waycross; a son, Dr. John Wayne Whitaker, Sr. (wife Arlene) of Waycross; a daughter, Teresa Carol Whitaker of Waycross; six grandchildren, John Wayne Whitaker, Jr., Matthew Tyler Whitaker, Marissa Ann Whitaker, Lake Foster, Candra Foste and Lydia Foster all of Waycross; two brothers, Wade Eugene Whitaker of Erwin, TN, and Walter Neal Whitaker of Broxton; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday (March 4, 2007) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
