WASHBURN, IL - Lester L. Whisler, 67, of Washburn passed away at 3:14 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at his residence with family by his side.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1942, the son of Ralph and Joyce Wiley Whisler. He married Kathleen A. O'Dell on June 7, 1964, in Washburn.
Surviving are his wife and their two children, John (Laura) Whisler of Burbank, Calif., and Julia Whisler of Lowpoint, Ill. He is further survived by his five grandchildren, Alex, Dylan and Reed Whisler, Jessica Hohulin and Noah Hohulin; as well as two great-grandchildren, Clayton and Ivy Grebner. He is further survived by three sisters, Dorothy (Dick) Murphy and Anne (Phil Schumaker) Nowak, both of Washburn, and Mary (Gerry) Maxwell of Metamora.
He was an art teacher in Tabor, Iowa, for several years. He then moved back to Washburn and was an art instructor at Peoria District 150 and Washburn School District. He later worked for Vernon Henry Sand and Gravel in LaRose, retiring several years ago.
He was a member of Washburn Methodist Church.
He was a past president of the Woodford County Historical Society and a current board member of Return To Pimiteoui Pow-wow.
He enjoyed playing guitar and singing in local establishments as well as writing some of his own music. He was an avid photographer.
Cremation rites have been accorded, and a memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Washburn United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the Native American Fellowship Dayspring Church in East Peoria.
