The youngest child and only daughter of John Byrd Wheeler, Jr. and Martha J. Parker, "Mattie" was born in Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois. Her family moved to nearby Calhoun County when she was a young girl. She lived there for the next 25 years.
Mattie married Ulysses S. "Grant" Auer on 09 Sep 1891 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 5 children, but only 2 survived infancy. One daughter, Ines, lived for only 1 month.
Grant was a physician in Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois. They lived there for 22 years. In the mid-1920's, the Auers moved to Anna, Union County, Illinois where Grant was a staff physician at the state hospital. [He eventually became the head of the hospital.]
Mattie was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mattie died 6 days after her 60th birthday at the Mitchell Reece Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She had been a patient there for 8 weeks and was receiving treatment for heart trouble at the time of her death.
Mattie was survived by her husband, Grant; 1 daughter, Lucille Camp of St. Petersburg, Florida; 1 son, Otis N. Auer of Chicago; and 1 brother, Henry Wheeler of Deer Plain, Illinois.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on 07 Feb 1928 at the Grafton Methodist Episcopal Church.
Mattie's husband, Grant, passed away in 1934 and was buried next to her.
Children: 2 daughters, 1 son, 2 unknown infants.
