Thomas Wheeler was born in 1621, and baptised in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England on February 8, 1621, the son of Thomas Wheeler and Ann Halsey. Thomas probably came to New England with his father in 1637. He was a freeman in 1641. Thomas was married about 1648, to Sarah Merriam, the daughter of Joseph Merriam and Sarah Goldstone, who was born in England about 1626. She also came to America with her parents, and the couple was probably married somewhere near Concord, Massachusetts, but no record of the wedding has ever been found. Thomas settled on his father's farm in Concord when his father removed to Fairfield, Connecticut in 1644.

Thomas and Sarah had ten children, all born in Concord. Thomas is known in the records of Concord as "Sgt. Thomas". Sarah died in Concord on February 1, 1676/7. Thomas then married the widow of Isaac Stearns, Sarah nee Beers on July 23, 1677. One of Thomas' sons, John, married his step-sister, Sarah Stearns, the daughter of Sarah and Isaac. Thomas died in Concord on December 24, 1704. There is no gravestone extant and no record of his burial in the Old Hill Burying Ground in Concord. He was probably buried on the grounds of his farm on Virginia Road in Concord.
