Athens lost one of her most beloved women on Tuesday morning when the spirit of Mrs. Mary Lane Westmoreland, widow of the late Dr. Theo Westmoreland, died at her home on South Clinton Street, at the age of eighty-four years.
She was the daughter of Judge George W. Lane and Martha Nicholas Davis Lane and a granddaughter of Col. Nicholas Davis, one of the pioneers of this county.
She was married to Dr. Westmoreland more than fifty years ago and had resided in Athens the greater part of her life. She was the mother of two children, a son and a daughter, both of whom are left to mourn the passing of as faithful and devoted mother as any son and daughter ever had. She was devoted to her home and family, idolized her distinguished husband during her life and devoted to his memory.
She was the last of a family of four children, two sons and two daughters. Her brothers were Charles and Hector D. Lane and her sister was Mrs. Kate Lane Townes, wife of Col. R. R. Townes.
The passing of this fine woman is keenly felt by many devoted friends. Always happy and always glad to see her friends, she lived a very retiring life, visiting among her near neighbors until she was prevented by illness and in the home she was most happy and satisfied. She loved the people of Athens and knew in other years, many of them, but the coming of years prevented her from mingling with the people as in early life, but to those who kept in touch with her, she was loyal and devoted.
To her children and grandchildren, we extend our sympathy.
She was laid by the side of her distinguished husband Wednesday afternoon in the City Cemetery.
