"CW4 (Ret) James G. West, 94, formerly of Coleman, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Trinity Care Center in Round Rock. Funeral service with Military Honors will be 1:00 p.m. June 2, 2014 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan, Coleman, with Dr. Ralph E. West officiating. Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
"James West was born May 27, 1920 in Coleman, the son of James Oliver West and Ora V. Pardue West Price and step-father, Palmore Rankin Price. He grew up in Coleman. On October 20, 1938, he married Elise H. Whitt and was blessed to be able to celebrate 70 years together.
"He began his 39 year military career by enlisting in the Texas Army National Guard 1935 in Coleman. He served in the United States Army during World War II and rejoined the 36th Infantry Division, Texas Army Guard in 1947. He was commission a Warrant Officer in 1950 and continued to serve his hometown Guard unit in Coleman until 1968 when he transferred to high headquarters in Brownwood. In 1977, he moved to the Texas Guard's State Headquarters in Austin, before retiring in 1980.
"He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father; wife Elise West; two brothers, Benjamin (Benny) Howard West, John Wesley West; one sister, Lester (Sis) Viola Duncan; one son-in-law, Wayne V. Garner; one granddaughter, Dana Yvonne West and one great-granddaughter, Brittany Elise Plant.
"Left behind to cherish his memory are two brothers, Dr. Ralph E. West, Garland O. West; one step-brother; Truman Lee Price; two step-sisters, Leta Mae Williams, Winnie Alice Miller; two daughters, Judy E. garner of Kyle, Bobbie A. Brooks and husband, Steve of Corpus Christi; two sons, James M. West and wife, Carolyn of Austin, Jimmy H. West and wife, Pat, of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
"Honorary Pallbearers are Steve Brooks, Vance Garner, James R. West, Justin Boyd, Jacob Garner and Joshua Plant.
"Family visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
"In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 500 West Liveoak Street, Coleman, Texas 76834."
