His wife, Virginia Simon, still survives.
Survivors include three daughters: Roberta E. Scott [Clearwater, Florida], Bonita E. (John R.) Gottschalk [Atwater, California], and Marilyn E. Loomis (Jerald J. Barko) [Michigan City, Indiana]; 5 grandchildren: Brian M. Loomis [St. Petersburg, Florida], Jonathan D. Scott [Clearwater, Florida], Aaron R. Whitaker [Atwater, California], Keith A. (Van) Whitaker [Gilbert, Arizona], and Christine L. Kala [Merrillville, Indiana]; 6 great-grandchildren: Avery L., Aaron C., and Anna E. Whitaker (Aaron R.), Brandon T. Whitaker (Keith); Heather L. and Michael W. Kala (Christine); 1 step-great-granddaughter: Amanda E. Winn; 1 step-great-great-grandson: Sergio X. She worked for Pullman, Schiff's Shoes, Sears, Wards, Walgreens (at both Franklin Street and Marquette Mall locations), and Baubles and Beads (Marquette Mall) all in Michigan City, Indiana. Bernice was a member of First United Methodist Church (Michigan City, Indiana) for over 53 years; where she sang in the choir, was a member of Esther-Lydia Circle, the Ladies Night Out group, and Vice President of Seniors at the church. She was a member of Springfield Homettes and RSVP at the Senior Center (Michigan City, Indiana). She enjoyed working on ceramics with the ladies at the Senior Center, drawing, painting, gardening, traveling with family, scrapbooking, numerous arts and crafts, listening to music, playing piano and organ, and dancing to music. As a matter of fact, she and Richard met at the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois, while dancing and Richard decided then and there that Bernice was the woman he was going to marry. She loved her friends and spending time with them. She loved people and she loved life. It goes without saying that she loved her family, but I said it anyway. She lived her life for her husband and her "girls". She was a good mother, mentor, wife, and friend. She will be dearly missed. Bernice's wishes were that in lieu of flowers, people would make memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church, St. Jude Children's Hospital, Running Strong for American Indian Youth http://www.indianyouth.org/ (Running Strong for American Indian Youth/ A Project of Christian Relief Services/ P.O.
