1940 Edward (39) and Francis (36) Bowers lived in Fargo, North Dakota with children Demarest (14), Arden (12) and Schuyler (6). (1940 census)
Frances W. Bowers, 93, passed away March 9, 1997, in San Francisco.
She was a native of Fergus Falls, MN, and moved to Fargo as a young woman. In 1925, she married Edward A. Bowers and continued her residence in Fargo until 1993, when she moved to Danville, CA. The Bowers family spent summers at their lake cottage on Rose Lake.
Mrs. Bowers was interested in every facet of life in Fargo. While raising their three children, she served as president of the PTA at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, again at Roosevelt Junior High and finally at Fargo Central High. Among other organizations, she was a member of the Fine Arts Club, the Cass County Historical Society, UCT, the El Zagel Auxiliary and the Christian Science Society. She served her church in almost every capacity including first reader. Her deep interest in religion led her to consistent support of interfaith activities in the community and she was honored for her contribution to religious affairs by being elected to "Who’s Who in Religion" in 1982. From 1972 to 1994, she devoted her life to the healing ministry as a Christian Science practitioner.
Frances studied millinery design in Minneapolis. Before her marriage, she worked in Fargo at the E.A. Ricker Co. During World War II, she resumed her career by joining the millinery department at Sgutt-Moody. She created a salad dressing and seasoner called Herb Fantasy, which was processed and distributed from the Fargo-Moorhead area and, through her efforts, was sold in prominent stores from Chicago to Billings, MT.
Her great love for Fargo and its citizens never waned, making her sort of an unofficial "Chamber of Commerce" for the area. Her husband, Edward A. Bowers, passed away in 1983. Two sons, Cyrus A. "Bo" Bowers and Schuyler W. Bowers have also passed away. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. James Morrow (Demarest), Danville; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
