Evelyn Baker, 81, of 404 Church St., Lafayette, Tenn., died Feb. 16, 2003 at the Macon County General Hospital in Lafayette, Tenn.
She received her BS degree from Tennessee State Teachers College (MTSU) in 1942. She was a teacher for the Macon County school system, retiring in 1981 and a member of the Lafayette First Baptist Church, Macon County Retired Teachers Association, Middle Tennessee chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Bridge Club and the Lafayette Garden Club.
She was a daughter of the late William and Bernice (Tharpe) Welty and the wife of Carl A. Baker, who died Jan. 20, 2002. They were married Nov. 6, 1940.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cecile and John Agan, Birmingham, Ala.; three sons and two daughters — Dr. William A. and Terry Baker, Versailles; Carl Andy and Jane Baker, Hendersonville, Tenn.; and Jon Baker, Watertown, Tenn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Oscar Lord, Westerville, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A brother, Neil "Buddy" Welty, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 18, at the Lafayette Baptist Church, with Rev. Steve Nelson officiating. Burial was at the Wilson County Memorial Gardens.
Grandsons of the deceased served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were: Sammie Colter, Bonnie Traughber, Jessie Mae Kelley, Dr. Larry and Jenna Key, Jean Peek, Lassie Perdue, Evonne Claywell, Harry and Evelyn Lea and members of the Lafayette Garden Club, Macon County Retired Teachers Association, the Queen Esther Sunday School class, and the Bridge Club.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Phillip Anderson and Son Funeral Home in Lafayette.
