Maude Ellen Wellons Latane of Washington's Birthplace in Westmoreland County, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 after a long illness at her home. She was 78. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lawrence W. Latane Jr.; and their two children, Lawrence W. Latane III and his wife, Becky; and daughter, Rebecca Ripley and her husband, Jeff Ripley. She had five grandchildren, Sarah Beth, Cameron and Sage Latane, and Evan and Hollyn Ripley. For many years she was president of the Wakefield Memorial Association which supported National Park Service efforts at George Washington Birthplace National Monument. In the 1970s, she helped her husband restore Blenheim, an 18th-century Washington family home which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. She was born in Southampton County and grew up in Emporia. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oak Grove at noon Monday. In appreciation of the organization, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., Suite 210, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
