RANDOLPH - Gladys I. Acker, 89, of Jamestown Street, Randolph, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Sept. 15, 1918 in Steamburg, N.Y., the daughter of the late Walter A. and Marjorie G. Marsh Wellman.
She attended Steamburg Rural Schools and was a 1937 graduate of Salamanca High School, and a 1941 graduate of Houghton College, where she received her Bachelors of Science degree in music. She moved to Randolph in 1942, where she had taught music in the Steamburg and Onoville Rural Schools, before teaching music and organ instruction at Randolph Central School, where she had also worked in the cafeteria.
Moving to Stockton in 1980, she was a member of the Stockton Community Church, where her husband, Harley was the church pastor. She was active with the church choir as pianist and organist. She was also a member of the Cassadaga Senior Citizens, Jamestown Christian League for the handicapped, AARP and the Christian Women's Club of Jamestown. She was also the past choir director for the Salamanca United Methodist Church.
Surviving are three sons: Elton (Barbara) Acker of Pickerington, Ohio, Pastor Donald (Nancy) Acker of Salamanca and Gary (Patricia) Acker of Appalachin, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 13 grand children; and a sister, Laura Bennett of Steamburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-father, Chandler H. Bolton; husband Rev. Harley E. Acker, whom she married June 26, 1942 and who died June 5, 2002; brothers: Lynn Wellman and Laurence Bolton; and an infant sister Wellman.
