Reverend David D. Welles, 44, of Altoona and formerly of Waymart died peacefully at home Thursday, June 10, 2004, following a lengthy illness. His wife is the former Betty Beckwith. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last October.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in Waymart, he was the beloved son of Florence Beckwith Welles, Honesdale and the late Floyd Welles.
After graduating from Western Wayne High School in 1977 he enlisted in the Navy where he proudly served his country for eleven years and received a degree in respiratory therapy. Shortly after his discharge from the Navy he made the decision to join the ministry. He attended the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina and received his degree in May of 1994. His first pastoral assignment was in Ulster, Pa., where he worked closely with the Salvation Army of Towanda. In 1998 he relocated his family to Altoona where he had been affiliated with the Conemaugh Valley Baptist Association the past six years.
He was a member of the Waymart Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Waymart Volunteer Fire Co., and the Waymart American Legion Post 889.
He is survived by three sons; David and his wife Donna, Ulster; Bradley and Christopher, both at home; three brothers, Thomas Carney and his wife Sue, Honesdale, Don Welles and his wife Florence, Equinunk, and Carl Welles, Waymart; a sister, Loretta Carney Oakley, Waymart; two grand- daughters, Ashlee and Haylee Welles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Chad and a brother, Lee Carney.
Cremation will be held at the Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, June 16th at 11:00 A.M. from the Waymart First Baptist Church with services by the Reverend Leo Mancini and the Reverend Doug Pilot.
Interment: Canaan Corners Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday, June 13th 7-9 P.M. at the Jenkins Funeral Home, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart. An American Legion Service will be held at 8:00.
