Lucy Jane (Welch) Carter
WEBER CITY, Va. — Lucy Jane Welch Carter went to be with the Lord Wednesday (April 16, 2008) at the age of 86.
She was blessed with a long life and will be missed by all who knew her. She was the last living child of Churchwell Owen Welch and Mary Jane (Molly) Jenkins Welch. Mrs. Carter was a charter member of Hill Chapel Freewill Baptist Church for 72 years.
Her paternal grandparents were James and Menerva (Hale) Jenkins; maternal gradparents were Bryon and Martha Welch. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Donald Eugene Carter; eight sisters, Mrs. Bill (Datha) Hill, Mrs. Millard (Lizzie) Hatcher, Mrs. Henry (Minnie) Stewart, Mrs. John (Mae) Snead, Mrs. Luke (Natalie) Kallem, Mrs. Ervin (Carrie) Crabtree and Maggie Welch; one brother, James B. Welch.
Her children include Mrs. C.J. (Donetta) Fields, deceased, Mr. Harry Carter and wife, Jill, Mrs. Rex (Rena) Carter and Mrs. Kenneth (Sandra) Clark; seven grandchildren, Debbie Fields Leight, Tracy Fields, Allen Carter, Michael Carter, Chuck Clark, Rex Carter, Jr. and Jody Carter; 10 great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild.
Visitation will be at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and other times at the homes of the children.
Funeral services will be held at Hills Chapel Freewill Baptist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Bro. Roger Herron, Pastor, Bro. Joe Hill and Rex Carter, Jr.
Singers include Harrison Rogers and Evelyn Herron, Johnny Roach, David Crabtree, and the Mabe Quartet.
Burial will follow in the Hill-Carter Cemetery at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tracy Fields, Allen Carter, Michael Carter, Rex Carter, Joe Carter, Chuck Clark, Timothy Leight and Evan Carter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Clark, Rex Carter, Sr., Harry Carter, David Crabtree, C.J. Fields, and the trustees of the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hills Chapel Freewill Baptist Church Building Fund, Mabe-Stanleytown Road, Duffield, Va. 24244 or Hill-Carter Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 521, Duffield, Va. 24244.
Refreshments will be served at the fellowship hall for out-of-town family and guests following graveside services.
