Ruth Priscilla Welch "Pat" Grimes 86, of Fredericksburg died Sunday February 8, 2009.
She was born in Wakefield, MA, November 21, 1922. She was the daughter of James and Margaret Welch.
Mrs. Grimes completed nurses' training at St. Joseph Hospital Nashua, NH in 1944. She served as an Army 2nd Lieutenant during WWII and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met and married Walter Kirk Stratton. They resided in Front Royal, VA where she was a nurse at Warren Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she led the choir and served in many other leadership positions.
Surviving children are Kirklyn Humphreys and her husband, Richard, of Fredericksburg, Duane Stratton and his wife, Carol, of Richmond, VA, W.K. Stratton, Jr. and his wife, Maureen, of Burbank, CA, Ross Stratton and his wife, Sherrie, of Madison County; 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Moving to Fredericksburg in 1967, Mrs. Grimes worked as a nurse at Mary Washington Hospital. She attended St. Mary Catholic Church. Her marriage to Dr. James E. Grimes took place on March 10, 1973 in Fredericksburg. They resided in Fredericksburg and King George, VA.
Surviving stepchildren are Deliece Blanchard and her husband, Fred, of Lynchburg, VA, Susan Smith and her husband, Wayne , of Harrisonburg, VA, and Jim Grimes of Ruckersville, VA; and five step grandchildren.
In 1983, Mrs. Grimes established a business to provide medical equipment for use in patients' homes. Pat Grimes, Inc. has now been serving residents of the Fredericksburg area for 25 years.
Mrs. Grimes was an active member of the Fredericksburg and King George Chambers of Commerce. In 1995 Pat Grimes, Inc. was named "Small Business of the Year" by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Over the years Mrs. Grimes was a leader in the Virginia Association of Durable Medical Equipment Companies. She served in all official positions including president. Mrs. Grimes was an active member of The Rappahannock Chapter of Military Officers Association of America.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 13 at the funeral home.
