On August 31, 1947 he married Shirley Nethken from Ruston, La. They had four children, Keith M. Welch of Shreveport, La, Karen W. Thompson of Jasper, Al., Kevin R. Welch, of West Monroe and Kristin W. Wall of Baton Rouge, La
Roy was a graduate of La Tech University with a degree in Music Education. He later received his masters and specialist degrees from Columbia University, in New York. He knew how to motivate people, he taught me that music is the universal language." His favorite verse from the bible was Isaiah 40:31 "They that wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run and not be weary: and they shall walk and not faint."
