Emily was the daughter of Johnson Weems and Permelia Leach. She first married James A.Boyd circa 1855 and had five children with him: Thomas Jefferson Boyd, William Johnson Boyd, Andrew J. Boyd, Mary E. Boyd, and Martha Rebecca Boyd. According to family tradition, he was killed in the Civil War circa 1864. She then married Hillary Foster Davis, a Confederate veteran, on December 25, 1870. Emily had two children with Hillary: Lucy Davis, and John F. Davis. When she passed away she was living with her oldest son, Thomas Jefferson Boyd.
