Francis D. Webb, 19, Ocean Springs, machinist at Ingall's Shipyard, Pascagoula, died at 10:05 pm Tuesday from injuries received about 3:15 pm on the Minor Road 3 and 1/2 miles northeast of Ocean Springs when a school bus and a truck sideswiped each other.
Officers reported that Webb and Elmer Wasmer, 23, were riding on opposite running boards of a panel pick-up truck driven by Lee Jones, 20, Ocean Springs, employe of Cyril Hopkins and in the truck were Mrs. Hopkins and two-year-old baby. The truck was giving the youths a ride when it and a school bus driven by W.M. Griffin with his daughter, Helen, of Fort Bayou traveling from Ocean Springs home, sideswiped each other on the highway in foggy weather. The left front of the school bus was damaged and the left side of the panel truck was pressed in.
Webb was brought to Ocean Springs by the school truck and taken from there to Biloxi Hospital. The accident was investigated by Roadpatrolman Eugene Rodriguez, Marshal R.C. Miller and Night Marshal W.E. Williams, Ocean Springs. Mr. Rodriguez found the youth's leg in a ditch, wrapped it in paper and took it to Biloxi, where he learned of Webb's death. Webb's right leg also was crushed and he suffered other injuries.
Officer Rodriguez said that Jones was arrested in connection with the accident.
Webb was a lifelong resident of Ocean Springs. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Josephine Mize(sic) Webb; three brothers, Tracey, Hugh and Walter of Ocean Springs; and nine sisters, Mrs. Henry Beaugez, Mrs. R.E. Cassity and Mrs. Geo. Kernan, Ocean Springs; Mrs. Mathew Taliancich, Biloxi; Mrs. C.T. Switzer, Gulfport; Misses Priscilla, Viola, Alice and Mildred, Ocean Springs and other relatives.
The funeral will be from the home at 1:30 Thursday with services at Antioch Baptist Church and burial in Antioch Cemetery.
Services will be by Rev. Holland. The body was taken home from the Bradford Funeral Home this afternoon.
