Eleanor Ellie P. (Webb) Hemmings of Hanover, age 88, died peacefully in her home of 65 years on May 27, 2011 under the care of her family and South Shore Hospice. She was born in Hanson, a daughter of the late Alymer E. and Florence A. (Reed) Webb. She was the wife of the late Harvey A. Hemmings for 60 years. Ellie attended the Hanson and Whitman School systems. Ellie had a great love of family and friends; and a generous caring heart, always lending a helping hand in a time of need. In addition to being an excellent cook and avid plant grower, she worked many positions outside of the home. During World War II she worked at the National Fireworks in West Hanover and later at Raytheon in Brockton. In the late 60s Ellie was the leader of the 4H horse club Golden Spurs; guiding young teens in the care and training of their horses. From 1976-1980 Ellie served as the Sunshine Girl for the Golden Agers of Hanover; sending get well wishes and cards of condolence, delivering flowers and fruit baskets to members needing to be cheered. Ellie is predeceased by four brothers; Robert, Warren, Wilbur, and Walter; three sisters; Blanche Weeden, Beatrice Webb, Dorothy Quinlan and a daughter, E. Lorraine Hemmings. She is survived by her children, Lois A. Downing and her husband James of East Bridgewater, Florence A. Nuesslein and her husband Richard of Hartford, ME, and Harvey A. Hemmings Jr. and his wife Laurie of Livermore, ME. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ellies family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the South Shore Hospice for their compassionate care in her final days and the Hanover Visiting Nurses for extraordinary care for many years. With their help and expertise we were able to give Mom her last wish, to remain in her home. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 1 from 4-8 p.m. in the Leighton-MacKinnon Funeral Home, 4 West Washington St., (at Rte. 58), Hanson. A funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with interment to follow in Center Cemetery in Hanover. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
