Bessie Louise Weaver Briggs, 84, formerly of Virginia Avenue, passed peacefully into eternal life with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, in her son's home. Born in Nansemond County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Joshua Miles Weaver and Mary Jane Boyce Weaver. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Edward A. Briggs Sr. and her son-in-law, Chester J. Cahoon Jr. Bessie was a past member of South Norfolk Women's Club, Portlock Garden Club and South Norfolk Baptist Church, where she was in the WMU and where she faithfully taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church where she was a member of the Naomi Sunday School Class taught by her friend, Lou Moseley. Survivors include her son, Edward A. "Eddie" Briggs Jr., and wife Kathy of Chesapeake; two daughters, Mary Ann Cahoon of Chesapeake and Angela Louise Overbey of Richmond; five grandchildren, Chester J. "Jim" Cahoon III and wife Jennifer, Elizabeth Ann "Annie" LePere and husband Bryon, Jonathan R. Briggs and wife Colleen, Timothy E. Briggs and wife Christi and Rosemary O. Overbey; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Edward LePere, Emily Grace Cahoon and Mary Callais LePere and two on the way, Jackson and Hannah; a sister, Margaret Lankford; a brother, Ernest Weaver as well as extended family and many friends. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Great Bridge Baptist Church. The Revs. Bryon LePere, Charles Moseley and Ray Owens will officiate. The interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. The viewing will begin today with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Chesapeake Regional Home Care Hospice Services. They were all angels to Bessie and her family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Great Bridge Baptist Church, 640 Battlefield Blvd. S., Chesapeake, VA 23322.
