Died of myocardial failure following acute bronchitis.In the Medina County Newspaper on Friday - April 5, 1940 the article is as follows: Widow of Capt. Bates dies on Tuesday - Mrs. LaVonne Bates, 81, was daughter of former Seville pastor. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church in Seville yesterday afternoon for Mrs. Annette LaVonne Bates, widow of Seville's famous giant, Capt. Bates. Mrs. Bates died Tuesday in her 81st year following a long period of failing health.

Rev. C.H. Kern and Rev. Randall, former pastor of the Baptist church, officiated and burial was in the Erie, PA cemetery.

Mrs. Bates, a native of Erie, PA, moved to Seville with her parents when she was 28 years old. Her father was pastor of the Baptist church in Seville for 4 years. In 1889, a year after the death of his first wife, she married Capt. Bates, who died in 1919 at the age of 80 years.

She was for many years the organist at the Baptist church and was a charter member of the Afternoon club. She taught the Friendship Sunday school class for 19 years and was active in other organizations in Seville. Surviving is a brother, Frank Weatherly of Columbus, Ohio

After much work and help, Rhonda Cookenour, 3rd great-grand neice of Captain Martin Van Buren Bates, was able to get a marker for Annette so that her grave would be marked. The marker was installed the week of 11-21-2016.

Annette is buried next to mother on the left hand side.
