Son of John Wesley Wayland and Anna Kagey Wayland.
Received his BA from Bridgewater College in 1899 and his Ph.D in 1907 from University of Virginia.Taught history and ethics at Bridgewater for two years.He helped organze Harrisonburg State Normal School(now James Madison University).Taught at Harrisonburg as a professor of history.Author of several books.
Married Mattie Virginia Fry and they had two sons.
