"Asa dealt largely in cattle and often went to Boston with large droves. He rode a beautiful and very intelligent white horse. In those days people did not use checks but had to carry money. On one occasion, he and John Way 3rd, a young relative who usually went with him, were returning from Boston each riding horseback. It was quite late when they reached Lempster and separated to go to their respective homes. Asa had not ridden far alone when his horse suddenly stopped and acted strangely. Although it was very dark, Asa could see a rope stretched across the road, so he put spurs to his horse's side and leaped the rope. In the morning, it was discovered that someone had dug his grave and apparently planned to rob and kill him." (gwm)
Asa paid a tax on 150 acres of unimporved land in 1793.
