ALSEY KATHERINE JARED was one of twelve children born to Israel and Rhoda (Meador) Jared.
She married (1) 1869 John H. Watt by whom she had three children: Cordelia "Delia", Wilbert S., Perry S.
She married (2) William J. Watt, nephew of her first husband. Three more children were born to this marriage: Thomas Archer, Bernice O, Pearl.
During Civil War, Alsey carried the mail for her father, Israel, and was taught to shoot accurately and straight to protect her father's important letters. Israel was an officer in the Intelligence division of the Union Army. It was his duty to find spies and deserters. He was too old for active duty. His four sons (Granville, Joel, James Mack and Thomas) were enlisted in the service.
Alsey trained herself to be the family protector and provider. She raised chickens and built her own coops. She could fix screens and use a hammer as well as any man. At the county fairs she always took prizes for her BuffCochin chickens, her homemade soft soap, and her salt rising bread. When the opportunity presented itself to hunt with her brothers she could pick off a squirrel as quick as any of them.
Mrs. Zella Pampe contributed the following small sketch of Alsey Katherine's life.
Alsey Katherine Jared was a rural schoolteacher before her marriage to John H. Watt. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She proudly wore the white ribbon bow as the badge of temperance.
She loved her family and her many friends and was sincerely mourned when she passed away 26 September 1932 aged ninety-two years. She outlived all her children except Delia.
