She was born January 22, 1916, in Cambusnestham, Scotland, the daughter of Angus and Jessie Forrest Watson. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 6. She married Wilfred J.C. Kane on March 11, 1933; he preceded her in death Dec. 13, 1995.
Helen was a homemaker and of the Christian faith. During WWII, she was a civilian airplane spotter who was proud of her responsibility of talking pilots in for landing, especially in fog. Since her move to Chatham, she was a member of the Chatham Senior Center and St. Andrew's Society. She enjoyed returning to Scotland for a visit in her later years.
She is survived by her son Ron (Myrna) Kane of Chatham; grandchildren, Kristine (John) Woods of Williamsville, Katey Bennett, Ronald M. (Karen) Kane, Wilfred Andrew Kane, and Helen L. (Mark) Schroeder all of Springfield; sister, Margaret Killen of Springfield; great-grandchildren, Colin & Kane Woods, Ian Bennett, Justin Schroeder, Ronald A. (Dana) Rinozzi, Nicole Kane, Nick (Jessica) Schroeder, Jesse Kane (fiancee' Tara Branham), Stephanie (Chase) Woolen; great-great-grandchildren Kael, Kayden, and Hadley. In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, John Watson; daughter, Patricia Bennett on Sept. 27, 1990; and grandsons, Kevin Bennett and Bruce Bennett.
Cremation rites will be accorded by Cremation Services of Central Illinois, in Chatham. Her family will greet friends at a memorial gathering on Thursday, January 27, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, where her memorial service will be Friday, January 28, at 11 a.m., with Robert Green officiating. Placement will follow at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in a columbarium niche.
