CHANDLER - Graveside services for Bessie Mae Watson, 85, Chandler, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Chandler Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Weems officiating under direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Watson died March 11, 2007, at a Tyler hospice.
She was born Dec. 16, 1921, in Gladewater to the late Jace Lee and Jettie Mae Mayhew and moved to Cove, Ark., as a child. During the Depression, she returned to East Texas and lived in Winona. She was one of the first telephone operators in Winona and operated a switchboard in her home. She later moved to Pine Springs community and worked for Stanley Home Products until the mid-1970s when she opened Watson's Tropical Fish, which she owned and managed until she retired in 1983. After retirement, she moved to Lake Palestine and later to a nursing home in Chandler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dee Watson, in February 1990; son, Melvin Ray Watson, on Sept. 3, 2003; and brothers, J.C. Mayhew, Oscar Mayhew and Lee Mayhew.
Survivors include sons, Gerald Dee Watson, Mansfield, and Jace Franklin Watson, Chandler; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers are Jeff Watson, Jimmy Watson, Clifford Watson, Glen Watson, Ruben Watson and Randy Watson.
Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
