During 1952, he enlisted in the United States Army and attended Officer Candidate Armored School at Fort Knox, Kentucky where he earned his commission as an officer.

After military service, Charles worked in marketing and field sales for several major national manufacturers which often involved extensive travel and his first job assignment was on the West Coast with the Stanley Works. After sale of this travel agency, Charles and Donna moved to their present residence in Menifee.

Charles and Donna met in San Francisco when Donna was employed by United Airlines. They were married on May 18, 1963 in Sausalito, California. They have one son, Jeffrey Charles Watrous, who resides with his wife in Laguna Hills, California.
