William Alfred "Bill" Watkins, Sr., 75, died at 8:22 AM Monday, Oct. 18, 1993, in his West Lafayette home. Born March 25, 1918, at Kingston, PA, he lived in Indianapolis before coming to West Lafayette in 1961. A graduate of Kingston High School, he also received his bachelor's and master's degrees in foreign language from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. On Nov. 20, 1943, he was married to Maria A. Rocha at Recife, Brazil, and she survives.

Mr. Watkins taught foreign languages at West Lafayette High School from 1961 until retiring in 1981. A veteran of World War II, he retired from the Army Reserve as a major. An accomplished pianist, he taught piano and played with a local band. He was also involved with Civic Theater. He was a member of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Lafayette.

Surviving with his widow are two sons, William A. Watkins, Jr. of West Lafayette and Lt. Col. John E. Watkins of Syracuse, NY; two daughters, Mary Lou (Mrs. Thomas J.) Kendall of West Lafayette and Liz (Mrs. Thomas M.) Schuetz of Atlanta; a sister, Lil (Mrs. C.C.) Isham of Florida; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
