Ruby Excell Parrish Watkins of Raleigh, NC, journeyed to Heaven on Friday, March 11, 2016, surrounded by her immediate and loving family. Born in a year Ruby would appreciate we not mention, she lived a very long and wonderful life and will always be "30 and holding."

Ruby spent her life dedicated to her family, feeding them with her wonderful cooking that was worthy of having her own restaurant (including the world's best pecan pie, pancakes, fried corn bread, and bread pudding); listening to them and offering sage insights when they needed an ear; providing a place to stay whenever life threw someone a curve; and serving up wry wit and humor with a quick, sharp mind that never faltered no matter what health challenges came her way.

Ruby was a great wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was profoundly loved and adored by those whose lives she touched, and that list is extremely long. The family matriarch, she was admired and respected in a way few people are. She will be greatly missed.

Ruby is survived by her daughter Ann Watkins; sons Connie and Robin Watkins and their wives, Winsome and Katherine; grandsons Ronald and Donald Watkins and their wives, Carla and Melissa; granddaughter Tammy Jacquay; step-granddaughter Kyra Kim and her husband, David; step-grandson Casey Oakley; 10 great grandchildren; siblings Percy Parish, Gene Parrish, Joyce Harrison, Jesse Parrish, George Parrish, and Bill Parrish; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was the devoted wife of the late Romie Watkins, and sister of the late Rachel Wrenn, William Parrish, and Shirley Hoffman.

Visitation was from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Brown-Wynn Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh. Funeral service was conducted at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel. Interment was at 2:00 p.m. at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.
