George W. Wassom, a Wagoner native and minister of 68 years, died Monday, October 18, 1993, at his home in Wagoner. Mr. Wassom was born December 18, 1903, four miles east of Wagoner, Indian Territory, to John C and Margaret Wassom.
He graduated from Wagoner High School in 1924 and while in school was employed by R. F. Man in is jewelry store as a watch repairman and salesman.
He married Della Shannon on December 27, 1924. Mr. Wassom was licensed to preach in the Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1927 and was ordained in 1929. He helped organize and build a number of churches in Kansas and Oklahoma.
He also helped in locating and establishing a Pentecostal Holiness College in Oklahoma City, now known as Oklahoma City Southwestern College. He taught religious education there for four years and served for 30 years on the school board, serving as chairman of the board for many years. He also held official positions in the church during his ministry, serving as general Sunday school secretary and treasurer and as a member of the East Oklahoma Conference board for several years. He was elected superintendent of the Ozark Conference in 1957.
Rev. Wassom is survived by his wife, Della of the home; a daughter, Linda F. Beller of Tulsa; a grandson, Darwin E. Dryden; a granddaughter, Teresa J. Fenimore; five great grandchildren, Angie, Julie and Tata Dryden, and Nathan and Rachel Fenimore. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Me Wassom, and a son, George Alvin Wassom.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 20, 1993, at the Abundant Life Center in Wagoner, with Rev. Cleo Atchley, Rev. Arlie Carson, Rev. Archie Beller, and Rev. Oscar Moore officiating.
Pallbearers were Leonard Holloway, Blunt Norman, Warren Hathcock, John Lamon, Clarence Cannon and Nathan Fenimore. Honorary pallbearers were the Rev. Roy Brown and Charles Cannon. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Mallett Funeral Home.
