St. Petersburg - Ms. Mamie Jo Warren Douglas, 97, of St. Petersburg passed away November 20, 2011 at her niece and nephew's home after an extended illness. She was a native of Union County, Florida. She spent most of her 40 year teaching career in Ocala and Baldwin. Many of her students still kept in touch with her. She and her sister, Blanche Brown, moved to the Barrington Retirement Center in Largo fourteen years ago. She graduated from Florida State College for Women and received her graduate degree from the University of Florida. She was very active in the local, state and national educational organizations. She was somewhat of a local legend for her animated presentations such as "The Mississippi Squirrel", "Jonah and the Whale", and "Little Orphan Annie." She and her sister were known for their extraordinary southern cooking, and had written several cookbooks. She excelled in acrylic and water color paintings of rural Florida. She was also and avid quilter and donated quilts for many fund raisers. She loved her clubs and was president of most, which include the Riverland Music Club, Retired Teacher's Association, American Cancer Society, AARP, The Worthington Springs Civic Club and the Women's Club. She was a life long member of Sardis Baptist Church. She also directed the Barrington Choraliers. She was preceded in death by her parents: Robert Bruce and Minnie Parrish Warren; her husband and childhood sweet heart, Kennie Douglas; brother: Francis Warren of Jacksonville; brother: Hubert Warren of Pensacola; and her beloved sister, Blanche Brown. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and many caregivers who will miss her dearly. Funeral services for Ms. Douglas will be conducted Wednesday November 23, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. in the Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. Paul O'Steen officiating. Internment will follow at Dekle Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Sardis Baptist Church, P.O.
