Ruth L. Warhurst, 89, died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2004) at Newton Medical Center.
She was born April 18, 1915, to Harold and Salinda M. (Showalter) Lewis in Strong City. They preceded her in death. She married Elvin Warhurst June 4, 1940, in Newton. He preceded her in death Aug. 13, 2003.
She attended Newton schools and graduated from Newton High School in 1932. She was a retired executive housekeeper for the former Bethel Deaconess Hospital. She was an active contributor as a Red Cross blood donor, and she served in the Red Cross Canteen Unit No. 17 during World War II serving snacks and meals to troops. She was a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church in Newton where she taught Sunday school and participated in WMS mission groups. She was the past president of the Kansas Association of Institutional Laundry Managers and a volunteer for Newton Medical Center, Friendly Acres, The Professional Centers and Meals On Wheels. She was a former member of the McKinley PTA and served as past president.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Whitney and Irene Box.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday with family greeting friends from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, all at Petersen Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors James Pauley and Timothy Conner officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Friendly Acres Retirement Center and First Baptist Church, both in care of the funeral home.
