Georgia Lenora Wardlaw was the youngest daughter of John Lewis and Margaret Smith Wardlaw.
Georgia graduated from Abbeville School in 1915 as class valedictorian. She graduated from Erskine College in Due West, SC in the class of 1919, where she served as senior class vice-president. She received her Master's Degree from the University of South Carolina.
By the time she started teaching at Balboa High School, Panama Canal Zone, in 1930, she was using the masculine form "George" as her first name. She taught there until 1946. Between 1943 and 1944 she married Col. Hugh J. Deeney, who was the Chief of the Adjutant General Division, and had served in both World Wars.
After his retirement, they settled in White Stone, VA. After her husband's death, she moved to Wilson, NC to be near her sister, Connie Morris. She fell and broke her hip in December, 1970, spending some 5 months recuperating (Connie passed away in 1971). She eventually made her way back to Abbeville, SC, where she lived out the rest of her extraordinary life.
The book "Genealogy of the Wardlaw Family" published in October, 1929 by Joseph G. Wardlaw, lists Georgia's birthdate as November 9, 1898, where her gravestone simply says 1899.
