Mable Ward Apperson, 74, a resident of Glass Hollow, Afton, a devoted friend and church worker, died at Lovingston Health Care Center on Thursday (May 18, 2006).
Born July 21, 1931, in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Claude Alexander and Clara Sprouse Ward. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her aunt and uncle, Henrian and Hawthorne Glass, who raised her after the death of her parents; and her husband, Alfred Hull Apperson Jr., who died in 1987.
Mrs. Ward was a loyal and dedicated member of Rodes United Methodist Church, where she was part of the United Methodist Women's group, helped as leader of the Ladies Bible Class and worked on the Lord's Acre Sale Canning Committee and Sweet Booth. She graduated from Rockfish Valley High School as class valedictorian in 1949 and was a retired department manager at Roses Discount Store in Waynesboro for 45 years.
Surviving are her sister, Myrtle Ward Sommerville of Afton; a nephew, Buddy Ward and wife, Phyllis, of Waynesboro; and a devoted caregiver and friend, Patricia Glass, of Afton; a niece by marriage, Ellen Apperson Brown of Stuarts Draft; three nephews by marriage, Thomas Ingles Apperson of New York, John Samuel Apperson IV of Charlotte, N.C., and James Devoe of Richmond; former Rose's associates; Rockfish Valley High School friends; and Rodes Ladies Bible Class.
Mable's interests involved reading, writing poetry and painting in oils.
Her family and friends will receive friends at Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton on Saturday (May 20, 2006) from 6-8 p.m. and other times at Mrs. Sommerville's residence.
A graveside service will be conducted Sunday (May 21, 2006) at 2 p.m. at Rodes United Methodist Church cemetery, with Pastor Richard McDowell and the Rev. Jim Hardwick officiating.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to Rodes United Methodist Church Building Fund, 8472 Rockfish Valley Highway, Afton, Va., 22920.
