Joe Walters Jr., 74, went to be with the Lord April 22, 2009, at his home in Hutchinson, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.

He was born April 4, 1935, in Hays, the son of Joseph James and Mary Schuckman Walters, Sr. He graduated from St. Peter and Paul Seminary in Annapolis, MD. A resident of Hutchinson since 1967, moving from Hays, he worked in the oil field while living in Hays, and later worked for 26 years as a correctional officer at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

He belonged to Church of the Holy Cross and American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.

On Nov. 23, 1963, he married Kathy Fischer in Hays. She survives.

Other survivors include: son, David and wife, Alison, Grand Rapids, Mich.; daughters, Carol Lappin and Jeannette Walters, both of Hutchinson, and Jeannice Walters, Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother, Wally Walters, Palm City, Fla.; sisters, Florence Schmidt, Burr Ridge, Ill., Charlene Weigel, Salina, Evelyn Joy, Portland, Ore., and Marge Moore, Hoisington; four grandchildren, Chelsey and Chandler McAhren, and Adam and Julia Walters; and great-grandson, Riley Buller.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters.

Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Reno County in care of the mortuary.
