***** Michael Thomas Burns. Michael was born on February 28, 1943 and died on September 9, 1969. At St. Charles Borromeo Academy, Michael played football where he then transferred to St. Augustine to graduate with the class of 1960. He played varsity football and attended Notre Dame University, he transferred to Santa Clara University to graduate with the class of 1965. In that same year, Burns enlisted into the Army on November 19, 1965 a year later on September 14 he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant at Ft. Benning, GA. He trained at the Special Warfare Center, Ft, Bragg, N.C.; he attended Ft. Benning paratrooper's school. After training, two years he was sent to Okinawa with company B, 1st Special Forces Groups (airborne), he then began his duty in Vietnam attached to Company D, 5th Special Forces Groups. Burns became a Captain of the Green Berets, as leader of a unit stationed in the South end of the Mekong Delta. He was on a mission in Cambodia as an adviser to villagers where he was wounded by a machine gun. Thomas was flown to a hospital where he lapsed into a coma as he was being prepared for surgery from which he failed to rally.
