Mrs. Mary Jo Walsh Feldhaus, age 85, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013.
She was born in Nashville on October 25, 1928 to the late Mary Jo Landry Walsh and Charles A. Walsh. She is a graduate of St. Cecelia Academy and attended Peabody College. While in college, she met her late husband, Dr. Henry Feldhaus, Jr. who preceded her in death in 1988. The two immediately became lifetime friends as they worked through life together for 45 years. They began their lives in Nashville while he was a medical student at Vanderbilt and then moved to Grand Rapids, MI for his residency. After four years in Grand Rapids, they moved to Shelbyville where he practiced medicine for 40 years while she supported him with care and love for their family by hauling horse trailers, ski boats, and countless dogs and cats all over Middle Tennessee. After his death, she began working as a travel agent in Shelbyville at Celebration Travel and then worked at Bedford County General Hospital in outpatient care, comforting everyone who walked through the door.
Education was always a top priority for her, and she encouraged all of her family members and friends to learn everything possible, both in the classroom and in their everyday lives. She served on the Bedford County Board of Education for 12 years, and this led to many interesting conversations around the kitchen table at night with her County Commissioner husband.
She experienced joy in life as she looked for the positive in everyone she encountered and found beauty in everyday that she lived. She cultivated that joy in her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Feldhaus, in 1963 and a sister Jean Walsh Hornberger in 1980.
She is survived by six children: Henry Feldhaus, III and his wife Jenni; Charlie Feldhaus and his wife Imelda; David Feldhaus and his wife Pam; Mary Jo Johnson and her husband Michael, all of Shelbyville; Dr. Julia Ann Hypes and her husband Dr. Mike Hypes of Morehead, KY; Steve Feldhaus and his wife Jennifer of Shelbyville; eighteen grandchildren: Jay Paquin and his wife Gina of Arkansas Pass, TX; Charlie Feldhaus, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Tomball, TX; Michael Johnson, Jr. and his wife Amanda of Knoxville; Dr. Jennifer Feldhaus of Shelbyville; David Feldhaus, Jr. and his wife Erin of Murfreesboro; Mary Jo Johnson of Murfreesboro; Dr. LauraAnne Stewart and her husband Wade of Cartersville, GA; William Feldhaus of Shelbyville; Andrew Feldhaus and his wife Samantha of Shelbyville; John Feldhaus of Huntsville, AL; Melissa Johnson of Murfreesboro; Anna Feldhaus of the Flat Creek Community; Katie Feldhaus of Nashville; Matthew Johnson of Shelbyville; Henry Feldhaus, IV of Shelbyville; Kayla, Blake, and Scott Feldhaus of Shelbyville; her sister Milanne Burns of Shelbyville; and five great-grandchildren: Heidi, Karlee, Gabe, Stephen, and Hattie Jo.
