Martha Louis Wallingford, universally known as "Mattie", was born in Kentucky, and came to Kansas by covered wagon as a teenager with her family. She was a teacher by profession, and rose to serve as superintendent of schools for Clark County, KS, before she married her husband, George W. Baker at the age of 30, on the 23rd of December, 1903. (Merry Christmas!) She mothered and raised five children with George.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who delighted in reading and telling stories of pioneer life on the plains. She was strongly religious, and devoted much time and energy to the Christian Church in Ashland, passing on her devotion to each of her children.
