Lewis "Lew" Wallace

Franklin County
Indiana, USA
Death: Feb. 15, 1905
Montgomery County

Civil War Union Major General, Author, New Mexico Governor. At the outset of the Mexican War, he was a law student in Indiana. He volunteered and entered the army as a 1st Lieutenant in Comany H, 1st Indiana Volunteers Infantry. He returned to law in 1848 and served four years in the Indiana State Senate. At the beginning of the Civil War he was appointed Adjutant-General of Indiana, soon afterward becoming Colonel and commander of the 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, with which he served in West Virginia. He became Brigadier General of Volunteers September 3, 1861, and received commission of Major General of Volunteers on March 21, 1862. During Confederate General Jubal Early's July 1864 strike through Maryland against Washington, DC, he was in command of the Baltimore Military District, and was responsible for assmebling the Union forces at the Battle of Monocacy near Frederick, Maryland. Although greatly outnumbered, the Union forces delayed General Early's trops for a critical 24 hours, which gave time for the Union defenses in Washington, DC to prepare for the eventual Confederate attack, which was repulsed. After the war he authored the work "Ben Hur", for which is is best known for. He served as Territorial Governor of New Mexico Territory, and as United Stated Minister to the Ottoman Empire. Wallace County in northwest Kansas is named for him.
