GILLEY Dorothy Opal (Walker) Smithers Dorothy Gilley passed away peacefully on Monday, July 6, 2009, at the Eleanor Jennings Adult Care Facility in Rossford, Ohio. She was born August 27, 1913, in Merryville, Louisiana to James Lee and Della Mae Walker. On June 7, 1930, she married Robert Ford Smithers and moved to Toledo, Ohio. Robert's jobs kept him away from home a lot so Dorothy worked at City Auto Stamping to supplement the family income. It was during this time that Robert died of cancer leaving her to raise their three children alone. She instilled a sense of responsibility, love and respect for others and the willingness to work hard for what they wanted. In 1955, at the age of 42, Dorothy was hired by Kroger. She worked at several Toledo area Kroger stores, was a union steward for many years and retired after 22 years with the company. Soon after, she married Joseph Ennis Gilley and moved to Hemphill, Texas to share his home, love and companionship. These years were filled with many family visits. Washing loads of clothes, cooking big meals, sleeping bags full of kids on the living room floor and fishing poles standing along the garage wall were things she looked forward to. There was so much laughter and Dorothy loved every minute of it. She and Ennis were married 25 years before he passed away. After his death, Dorothy moved back to the Toledo area to be close to family again. She resided at Otterbein-Portage Valley Retirement Living Community for 4 1/2 years where she made many friends and lived a few doors away from her daughter, Jennie Lee Ferguson. Recently, Dorothy moved to the Eleanor Jennings Adult Care Facility in Rossford, Ohio. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Luckey, Ohio. Her family was of the utmost importance to her and she was so proud to be the matriarch of 5 generations. Mom and Gramma - we will miss you so much. She is survived by sons, Robert Earl (Kathleen) Smithers, Paul Charles (Nancy) Smithers; daughter, Jennie Lee Ferguson. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Marilyn (Steve) Hall, Jerry (Amy) Smithers, LuAnn (Mike) Crites, Keith (Val) Smithers, Beth Smithers and partner, Cherie, Scott (Rita) Smithers, Pat (Kim) Ferguson, Mike (Christine) Ferguson, 19 great-grand-children; 5 great-great grandchildren; 12 half-brothers and sisters, and many family members and friends in Texas. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, James and Della Mae Walker; husbands, Robert Ford Smithers and Joseph Ennis Gilley; sister, Myrtle Smith; brothers, Arthur, Floyd and Wallace Walker; son-in-law, Charles Ferguson and granddaughter, Karol Lynn Smithers. Visitation for family and friends will be from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary in Perrysburg, OH (419-874-3133). Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July, 10 2009, at Otterbein Portage Valley Retirement Living Community in Pemberville, Ohio with Pastor Pete Johnson officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Fort Meigs Cemetery in Perrysburg, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Dorothy's life with an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Faith United Methodist Church in Luckey, Ohio or the Eleanor Jennings Adult Care Facility in Rossford, Ohio. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all of the care they provided Dorothy. Special thanks go to the staff of Eleanor Jennings Adult Care Facility for their kindness, compassion, and attention to the "little" details which ended up meaning so much. They all became part of our extended family. Condolences to the family may be made by visiting www.witzlershank.com
