Death has claimed J. Ellis Walker. He died at his home in Rolla Friday afternoon, June 15, 1945, after a brief illness. On Thursday, the day before his death, he and Mrs. Walker drove to West Plains, MO where Mr. Walker was engaged in a lawsuit in the Circuit Court. Enroute home, Thursday afternoon, Mr. Walker was taken sick and a few miles north of Houston, he stopped on the road to rest. Attorney Llyn Bradford, who was the opposing counsel in the case, with others came along and perceiving Mr. Walker's condition, John Marlow, who was with Mr. Bradford, drove the Walker's home. Early Friday morning, Mr. Walker's condition grew worse and a Doctor was summoned. He died about eleven o'clock Friday. His death removed from our midst a real character. He had practiced law at Rolla and in southern Missouri for over forty-six years. He claimed to have been in the trial of nearly 3000 criminal cases, also many civil cases.

J. Ellis Walker was born near Lanes Prairie in Maries County, Missouri September 8, 1866. He was the son of William R. and Emily J. (Hoss) Walker. After the public school, the deceased entered the Vichy Normal School; afterwards, attending the School of Mines of Rolla. He went to the State Teacher's College at Warrensburg, from which he graduated in 1895 with the Bachelor's of Science Degree. In 1895-96, he taught in the Steelville Normal and Business College. Afterwards, he was chosen as Superintendent of Schools in Washington, MO and served for three years. On April 5, 1899, he was admitted to practice law at Rolla and had followed this profession to the day of his death. Mr. Walker and Mrs. Lyda (Ferrell) Elliott were united in marriage at Rolla on October 13, 1902. To this union one son Vir Walker of Wood River, Ill was born who with his mother and grandson, William Douglas Walker, survive. Also, surviving are a stepson, Dr. Loren Elliott of Albuquerque, New Mexico, a brother, Alonzo D. Walker of Belle, MO, and a number of relatives and friends, who mourn his death. Mr. Walker held member ship in Rolla Lodge and Rolla Chapter of Royal Arch Masons and was a faithful member of Rolla Christian Church and was a teacher of a Bible Class. He was held in high regard by many friends. Funeral Services were under the direction of Null Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. E.M. Romine at Rolla Christian Church last Sunday afternoon. Assisting in the service were Miss Ernestine Kilpatrick who sang two solos with Miss Maxine Paulsell as accompanist. A large crowd was in attendance and the floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Following the church service, Rolla Lodge of Masons took charge of the remains and he was buried with Masonic honors in the Rolla Cemetery. Pall-bearers were George Breuer, Joe Fey, Leslie Lanning, Joe Davis, C. D. Hazelwood, W. E. Branson. Honorary bearers were John Barnitz, P.H. McGregor, L.W. Fitzpatrick, W. D. Jones, Emory Allison, Llyn Bradford, L.H. Breuer, Lee Wynn. Besides his son, Vir. Walker, wife and son of Wood River, Ill., other relatives present at the funeral were Alonzo D. Walker of Belle, MO., Edgar Lovelace, El Paso, Texas and John Walker of Sullivan, MO. Also the following members of the Bar were present: Judge W. R. Barton and A.L. Funk of Houston, MO, Harvy Eldredge and T.A. Shockley of Waynesville, MO, Earl Roberts of Steelville, Mo and Hon. W. F.(?) Elmer of Salem, MO. Others noted were Dr. and Mrs. E.W. Ousley and W.H. Powell of St. James.
