|Death: ||Sep. 23, 2012|
Louise Benkler, age 92, passed away September 23, 2012 from age related illness. She made Kennewick her home for the last 12 years to be near family. Louise was born on the family farm outside Centerville, Iowa on October 8, 1919. She was one of 14 children born to Anthony Johnson and Ella Wakefield. She is survived by five younger brothers and sisters; twins Bill Johnson and Tillie Burhans, Dorothy O'Conner, Clarence Johnson, and Alford Johnson.
After leaving the farm in Iowa, she went to Chicago to work for the Motorola Company during the war, where she met the love of her life, Samuel Benkler. They were inseparable until his death in 1986. Louise then lived near family; sister Tillie in Iowa, daughter Irene in Utah, and finally daughter Dorothea (Dottie) in Kennewick.
Louise was a committed mother and wife, and a lifelong letter writer to keep track of extended family. She enjoyed gardening, needlework, reading, jigsaw puzzles, and tracking political issues. She kept track of current issues and was always ready to discuss these issues in detail.
Louise is survived by stepson, Ron Benkler (Rena), son Jack Benkler, and daughters Irene O'Brien (Pat), and Dottie Stevens (Don). She also has nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Louise and family are extremely thankful to the support she received at Desert Villa Apartments, Canyon Lakes Restorative Center, and Kennewick General Hospital. The family asks that donations to the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy and Hospice be made in her name.
