Al Owned "Al's Cafe" in Santa Ana, California from 1940 to 1945. He came down with TB and could no longer work in the cafe handling food or be around customers.

While recovering at home he learned a new trade---watchmaker. When he was able to go back to work he opened a small jewelry store--"Waits Jewelers". He had this store from 1950 until his death in 1962.
