Leo J. Waite, 74, of New Hartford, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital Center.
Leo was born July 13, 1929, in Utica the son of the late Leo F. and Blanche Y. Waite.
He was educated in Utica schools, graduating from Utica Free Academy in 1947. While a freshman in high school, he met his beloved wife Jacqueline Lamphere and they enjoyed 51 loving years together, raising five children. She passed away in 2000.
Leo was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II.
Before the war he was employed building homes in the greater Utica area. For many years he worked in the meat cutting, grocery and restaurant businesses. He was a member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchers Workman Union, District Union Local No. 1. Later he owned and operated his own home improvement business for more than 30 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. Leo was especially fond of music and enjoyed playing the organ and singing. He was a devoted husband and a loving and caring father and grandfather.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Catherine Rhoades of Utica and Kim and Arthur Newell of Holland Patent; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Leo G. and Nancy Waite of Whitesboro, Thomas and Kathy Waite of Philadelphia, PA and Lynn Waite of New Hartford; and nine grandchildren, Matthew and Jennifer Waite, Thomas and Allison Waite, Casey Newell, Kelly, Tracy and Brad Rhoades and Brittney Moran. He also leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Philip Vlaic of Seal Beach, CA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Ronald; four sisters, Doris Cole, Ruth Wart, Mary Waite and Norma Buddle; and a brother, Richard Waite.
