Colette M. Moriconi, A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, Kansas. Colette Moriconi, a vivacious, quick-witted woman, died peacefully on March 15, 2008, a week shy of her 97th birthday. The first of six children, Colette was born on March 21, 1911 to Josephine Kraner Wachter and Peter Wachter in Frontenac, Kansas. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in Paola, Kansas in 1929, trained at Mount Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas, and became a registered nurse. Colette married Pete Moriconi in 1936. In the first years of their marriage they lived in Burton, Kansas. Their daughters Mary Jo and Carolyn were born in 1938 and 1939. They moved to Wichita, where Colette was an active member of Blessed Sacrament parish. They built their dream house in 1965 and joined St. Thomas Aquinas parish. Colette and Pete lived on Glasgow Street for the remainder of their fifty-seven year marriage. Colette loved being a nurse. She did private duty and hospital nursing for a few years before she was married and after two decades of devoting her attention to her family, she began a twenty-year career as a school nurse in the Wichita Public Schools. After retirement, Colette and Pete spent happy years traveling with friends and family and attending football and basketball games. Colette was a fun-loving person who enjoyed fishing, gin rummy and dancing with Pete. She was a voracious reader, an entertaining storyteller, a feisty conversationalist, and a loyal friend. Colette was devastated when Pete died in 1993. In 1999 she began building a new community of friends at Georgetown Village, where she lived independently until days before her death. Colette took great pride in the accomplishments of her daughters and granddaughters. Colette is survived by her devoted sister, Sister Agnes Joseph Wachter of Wichita, Kansas; her brother and sister-in-law Joe and Marianne Wachter of Pittsburg, Kansas; her daughter and son-in-law Mary Jo and Tom Sparrow of West Lafayette, Indiana; her daughter Carolyn Anderson of Leverett, Massachusetts; her four granddaughters, Kisa Takesue and her husband Glenn Turner of Cranston, Rhode Island; Katie Watson of Chicago, Illinois; Kimi Takesue of New York, New York; and Julie Watson of Chicago, Illinois. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Dear Neighbor Ministries, 1329 S. Bluffview, Wichita, Kansas 67218 or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, Kansas 67202 Tributes to the family via www.downingandlahey.com.
