Corporal Wigen Killed on Leyte, in Plane Crash
Enroute home on furlough, after spending ???? months in the South Pacific war
theater, Cpl. Kenneth Wigen ??? only son of Mr. and Mrs. C?????? Wigen, of
4122 South 15th street was killed in the crash of a ??? transport plane on
the island of Layte, in the Philippines.
A message received by the parents Saturday night from the War Department,
Washington D.C. said Corporal Wigen had been killed on March 15. The message
did not state anything about the long delay in announcing their son as a
casualty.
He had advised is parents in a letter from the Philippines dated March 4, that
he had been granted a furlough and expected to leave shortly for the states.
Unofficial reports state that the transport plane crashed into a mountain side
on Leyte, while trying to gain altitude after the takeoff.
Left In 1940
Corporal Wigen left Manitowoc with Company E of the 32nd division for Camp
Beauregard, La. after being employed at the ship yards here. That was in
1940. He was (several lines too light to read)
In addition to the parents, a sister, Luella, of Chicago survives.
