US Senator (1877-1897). He was appointed the United States District Attorney for Indiana by President James Buchanan. in 1858. In 1860, he was elected to Congress. On Mondy, October 17th, 1859, the Harper's Ferry Incident occurred. A battle ensued against John Brown and 21 followers who were attempting to start a slave rebellion. Amoung the captured from Brown's party was John E. Cook. Cook was the brother of then Indiana Governor, Ashbel P. Willard. Voorhees was hired by the Indiana Governor to defend Cook. Voorhees traveled to Virginia where he gave a magnificent speech in Cook's defense. He drew attention to the notorious John Brown and other Abolitionist leaders who had incited this outrage by influencing young minds. Cook was acquitted of the treason charge, but was declared guilty of murder.
