"A Great Guy"
After a long and wonderful life Stan passed away in his sleep on January 5, 2004.
He was born on November 8, 1911 at Mayfield, Utah. He was the son of William Martin and Hannah Scow Voorhees.
Stan was hired by the Union Pacific Railroad at age 15 because they needed a clarinet player for the Union Pacific Railroad Band. He worked for them 48 1/2 years. He married Elma Margaret Hickman on October 28, 1928 at Beaver, Utah. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on May 2, 1968. When Elma passed away they had been married for 66 years.
Stan's hobbies included golf, walking, swimming, and music. Stan and Elma traveled extensively, first in their camper, then in their motor home. They also took several cruises together.
Stan thought people took life too seriously so he was always kidding around. He loved children and was always making a fuss over them. He was a very frugal man but was always very giving to people less fortunate than himself. He was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Leo Smith of Sandy; grandchildren Shari and Cary Cheifer of Corona, CA; Victor and Lori Smith of Draper; Jeff and Wendy Smith of Sandy; Colleen and James Powell of Salt Lake; Garret Voorhees of Portland, OR; Desiree Voorhees of Santa Cruz, CA; sisters-in-law, Betty Warden, Erma Smith, and Jean Hickman; brother-in-law, Hubert Hickman; 15 great-grand-children and four great-great-grand-children. He had several special nieces, nephews, and cousin and close friend Marie Bjerregaard. Preceded in death by his wife Elma, parents, son William Reed Voorhees, and one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at 12 Noon in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary Chapel, 1950 E. 10600 So., with a viewing one hour prior to the services. Interment Larkin Sunset Gardens.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to American Heart Association, 1937 S. 300 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84115.
