Voigt was educated in Milwaukee public schools and then studied at the Michigan Stage Agricultural College and graduated in 1881. He moved west and surveyed mining claims in Montana for a short period and then settled in Los Angeles where he worked as a salesman at the Sharp& Bloeser Furniture Company. Voigt then worked for Dolter & Bradley who were also in the furniture business. He then worked for the Los Angeles Furniture Company and after purchasing stock in the company, became assistant manager. Voigt married Nevada Gould whose father was David Anderson, one of the first American settlers in Los Angeles. Voigt and his family resided at 436 West Lake near downtown Los Angeles.
