Rites at Decorah for Polio Victim
CHARLES CITY - Funeral services for Mrs. Virgil E. Houdek, 33, were held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Lutheran Cemetery at Decorah, the Rev. M.A. Egge, of Decorah, officiating. Mrs. Houdek died in a university hospital at Iowa City Thursday after being stricken with polio 8 days before while visiting relative in Decorah.
Mrs. Houdek was born in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Feb. 18, 1917. She received her education in Winneshiek County schools. Her marriage to Virgil E. Houdek took place Dec. 8, 1945, in Waukon. The Houdeks had lived in Charles City for the past 2 1/2 years.
Survivors include her husband; her father, Albert Vine, Decorah, 2 sons, Gary 3 and Stephen 2, both at home; and 5 brothers and a sister all of Decorah. Mrs. Houdek is the first Charles City person to die of polio this year.
